Can engineers be lazy? Copilot, an AI-assisted tool that can help you write programs on Github, is online, and the monthly fee is only $10

Like the rise of compilers and open source, AI-assisted coding will fundamentally change the nature of software development, giving developers a new tool.

Microsoft’s Github has launched an AI-assisted programming tool called Copilot, which automatically recommends code to users when developing programs. GitHub initially launched a preview of Copilot last year in partnership with OpenAI,It is now open to all developers.

GitHub Copilot, priced at $10 per month or $100 per year, provides next-line code suggestions as developers code in built-in development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code, Neovim, and JetBrains IDEs. Copilot can suggest complete methods and complex algorithms and code samples and assist with unit testing.

Over 1.2 million developers have signed up to use the GitHub Copilot preview in the past 12 months, and it will remain a free tool for proven students and maintainers of popular open source projects. In a document enabling it, GitHub says that nearly 40% of the code is now written by Copilot.

“Like the rise of compilers and open source, we believe that AI-assisted programming will fundamentally change the nature of software development, providing developers with a new tool that makes it easier and more Program faster and make their lives happier.”

Microsoft invested $1 billion in research firm OpenAI, giving birth to GitHub Copilot. It is built on OpenAI Codex, the descendant of OpenAI’s flagship GPT-3 language generation algorithm.

However, GitHub Copilot has been controversial. Just days after the preview release, there are questions about the legality of Copilot’s training on public code posted to GitHub. In addition to copyright issues, one study found that about 40% of the code that Copilot outputs has security holes.
