Computex 2022: AMD announces Zen 4 architecture Ryzen 7000 processor and AM5 platform, as well as Corsair gaming laptops!

AMD Chairman and CEO Dr. Lisa Su delivered a keynote speech at Computex 2022, bringing desktop computer information such as Zen 4 architecture Ryzen 7000 series processors and the new AM5 platform.

The biggest focus of this announcement is the desktop Ryzen 7000 series processor, which is expected to be launched in the fall of 2022. It adopts the new Zen 4 architecture, and the processor core adopts the TSMC (TSMC) 5nm node process, which is higher than the 7nm node of the Zen 3 architecture. The process is more advanced.

In the processor core part, the Zen 4 architecture increases the L2 cache memory of each core from 512KB of the previous generation to 1MB, bringing better data throughput efficiency. The maximum Turbo clock can exceed 5GHz. Combined with IPC (Instruction Per Clock, instructions per cycle) and the effect of clock boost can bring more than 15% single thread performance gain.

The above 15% gain was tested by AMD Performance Labs using Cinebench R23 1T on May 5, 2022. The test object is Ryzen 7000 engineering sample with dual-channel DDR5-6000 16GB memory (CL=30) and Ryzen 9 5950X Dual-channel DDR4-3600 16GB memory (CL=16), 2 platforms use Asetek 280MM water cooling radiator. The I/O Die part is advanced from the GlobalFoundries 12 nm node process to the TSMC 6nm node process. In addition to helping to reduce waste heat and boost the overall operating clock, the improvement of I/O Die is also expected to bring more Potential processor and memory overclocking headroom.

Another improvement of the I/O Die is the integration of the built-in display chip of the RDNA 2 structure, and provides up to 4 sets of HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 2 video and audio output terminals. Although the number of computing units of the built-in display chip has not yet been announced, At least basic display capabilities can be provided, and it is expected to bring better gaming performance than the previous generation Ryzen 5000G series processors.

The corresponding AM5 platform uses LGA 1718 pins, supports DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 bus, and is compatible with the current AM4 radiator, allowing users to continue using the current radiator. In addition, the AM5 platform supports the SVI 3 power specification, which can improve the performance and stability of the platform through more phases, higher power, finer and faster response power control functions.

The corresponding 600 series chipsets include X670E, X670, B650 and other products. X670E is a new generation flagship chipset with the best overclocking and power management functions, and fully supports PCIe 5.0 graphics cards and solid state drives.

The X670 supports PCIe 5.0 solid state drives at least in the first M.2 slot, and most motherboards also support PCIe 5.0 graphics cards (the implication is that it is not mandatory for board manufacturers to support). The B650, which belongs to the mainstream price band, only supports PCIe 5.0 solid-state drives.

The new Zen 4 architecture doubles the new L2 cache memory per processor core to 1MB to increase data throughput efficiency. Its maximum Turbo clock can exceed 5GHz, and with IPC performance improvement, the total can bring a single-core performance gain of more than 15%.

The new AM5 platform adopts the same LGA pin type as Intel processors, and has 1718 sets of pins. The best thing is that it is compatible with the current AM4 heatsink.

In terms of connectivity, AM5 provides 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes, 14 sets of 20Gbps high-speed USB, Wi-Fi 6E, and 4 sets of audio and video output terminals, all of which are directly connected to the processor.

The first wave of chipsets will include X670E, X670, B650 and other products.  Both the X670E and X670 support PCIe 5.0 graphics cards and solid-state drives, of which the X670E has better overclocking performance. The B650 only supports PCIe 5.0 solid-state drives, but it is more price-competitive.

Perhaps PCIe 5.0 graphics cards will have to wait for a while, but PCIe 5.0 solid-state drives will appear soon and can bring more than 60% continuous read and write performance gains.

Manufacturers such as ASRock, Asus, Biostar, GIGABYTE, and MSI will also launch 600 series chipset motherboards.
