Jodie Whittaker’s time as Doctor Who is coming to an end. Five years and three seasons later, the actress leaves the TARDIS and gives way to Ncuti Gatwa, whom you will surely recognize for her role in Sex Education, the Netflix series. And if Whittaker made history as the first woman to bring the character to life, Gatwa will do the same by becoming the first black actor to play Britain’s favorite alien on screen.
“There are no words to describe how I feel,” Ncuti Gatwa said upon hearing the news. “Honor, emotion and a bit of fear. This series means a lot to many people, including me, and my predecessors have taken on this responsibility (and this privilege) with great care. I will endeavor to do the same. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart, but I’m going to give this show my all. »
The return of Russell T. Davies
Ncuti Gatwa is not the only surprise the fourteenth season will have. The current showrunner of the series (Chris Chibnallde) is also leaving his post and it will be Russell T. Davies who returns to take charge. The illustrious screenwriter was responsible for reviving Doctor Who in 2005, when the character was mired in a limbo that lasted 16 years (the previous season was in 1989) and which many thought would never emerge again.
Davies was thrilled with his return and the choice of the new Doctor. “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! “, did he declare. “It is an honor to work with him. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to get started. It’s breathtaking, he had the Doctor and the keys to the TARDIS in seconds. »
Ncuti Gatwa in video games
Precisely in 2022, we also saw Gatwa take its first steps into the world of video games. The actor is one of the protagonists of GRID Legends, the latest installment in the Codemasters driving saga. The game chose to enhance the narrative with a new story mode called Driven to Glory in which renowned actors appeared, as is the case with Ncuti.
Curiously, this is what we liked the least in the title. In our analysis, where we salvaged the rest of the GRID Legends proposal, we spoke of the cutscenes of said story as “one of the most embarrassing things we’ll see this year.” Needless to say, Ncuti Gatwa played no part in any of this and we wish him well as the new Doctor Who.
